Ben was in Co H of 3rd Virginia Cavalry, Col Thomas H Owens. He waswounded and permantly disabled by a ball in the thigh on 28 May 1864 atHall's Shop (?). Ben grew up in the home of his grandparents Waller, hisbrothers and sisters stayed with th e father Thomas after he remarriedwhen Ben's mother died. Ben was less than 6 when his mother died and maynot have took to his new stepmother.
