Joseph Richardson was born in Loudoun County, Virginia around 1748 and died in Rochingham County, North Carolina, around 1817. He married Sarah Compton at Loudoun County, Virginia, in 1769. Sarah Compton Richardson was born in 1752 and died in August 1847.

Lt. Joseph Richardson served in the following ways during the Revolutionary War: Returned in 1776 from an expedition against the Indians from as far as Cherokee Territory. After that he was in the Continental Army until the close of the Revolutionary War. He started from Bottetourt County, Virginia as a Sergeant. Records list him as Ensign, January 1777 Second Lieutenant, July 1777, and as retiring June 1, 1778. A roster of soldiers in the American Revolution shows him while an ensign, enlisting for a three-year term of service in the 6th North Carolina Battalion, and an old letter shows that he was a Lieutenant under Capt. Gillespie who was killed at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in Guilford County North Carolina.
